A curious reverse
Lot 1882
UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Late 3rd-4th centuries. 'Quinarius' (Gold, 14 mm, 2.99 g, 6 h), 'Derived Gordian Group B'. IИIOИI IIIИIOИI Laureate imperial head to right. Rev. II II ИIOИOΛ Uncertain figure seated left, extending claw-like right hand. Original suspension loop broken off, otherwise, very fine.

From the Aurum Barbarorum Collection.

Stylistically, this curious little piece differs significantly from all other coins derived from the 'Gordian Group', but it is included here for its small size. The reverse is particularly charming, showing an abstract figure, perhaps the emperor, with an extended claw-like right hand and a single leg, seated to the left on a chair with a square back perhaps symbolizing the left arm and a vertical scepter.
